KUCHING: AirAsia today launched its inaugural flight from Kuching to Langkawi, which its head of commercial Spencer Lee said was AirAsia's commitment to continue growing its Kuching hub.
He said Sarawak had a lot to offer beyond tourism destinations.
"Increasing connectivity into Sarawak is important for us as it is also one of the top preferred investment destinations in Malaysia with the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) attracting investors to set up manufacturing plants involving ICT, agriculture and many other industries," he said.
Lee said that last year, AirAsia flew about 3.2 million travellers in and out of its Kuching hub and it believed that the introduction of the two new routes to and from Kuching, namely Pontianak recently and Langkawi today echoed AirAsia's commitment in Sarawak.
"We would like to thank the state government for its continuous support and guidance and we look forward to strengthening this hub with further connectivity in the future," Lee added.
He also said that AirAsia was planning to have another direct flight from Kuching to an international destination, but declined to reveal the destination, saying it was still being discussed.
In conjunction with the launch of its Kuching-Langkawi inaugural flight which departed at 12.55pm from Kuching International Airport today, Lee said AirAsia was offering celebratory all-in-fares from RM100 one way, available for booking online at airasia.com from now until Aug 13 for the travel period of between now and Feb 8, 2018.
The promotional fares are also available on AirAsia's mobile app on iPhone and Android devices, as well as the mobile site at mobile.airasia.com.
Lee said AirAsia was now flying to 11 destinations from Kuching with more than 220 weekly flights one way.
He said fly-through guests could also connect to 18 countries including Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Macao, Indonesia from Kuching via Kuala Lumpur.
Besides Langkawi, other destinations are Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baru, Kota Bharu, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Pontianak. — Bernama
