PETALING JAYA: A lawyer was sentenced to nine months in jail and fined RM10,000 for criminal intimidation by the magistrate's court today.
Magistrate Mohd Azali Ibrahim sentenced A. Suayri, 56, for criminal intimidation against another lawyer, by threatening to cause grievous hurt or death against the latter.
He committed the offence at the Lake View Club in SS12, Subang Jaya at 11.25pm on May 24, 2014 against fellow lawyer Datuk Suraj Singh.
Deputy Public Prosecutor N. Sivashangari said the accused, despite being a law practitioner "took the wrong way".
She asked the court to consider public interest and impose a heavy sentence to serve as a lesson to the accused.
Defence counsel Liow Boon Lee applied for a stay of execution which was granted by the court.
Mohd Azali however increased the bail quantum from RM1,500 to RM5,000 with one surety.
Both Suayri and Suraj were at a dinner organised by the Selangor Bar Council when the former made the death threat.
The prosecution called eight witnesses to the stand during the course of trial, while the defence called six witnesses including the accused.
When met outside the court, Suraj said he was glad the matter was over.
"I am just happy that the case is finally over," he said.
