GEORGE TOWN: Penang State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh has been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The Sungai Puyu state assemblyman was detained after giving his statement at the MACC headquarters at 2.40pm today.
The arrest was believed to be in connection with an illegal factory which produces carbon filters at Sungai Lembu, Bukit Mertajam that was raided by multiple agencies led by the MACC yesterday.
R.S.N Rayer who accompanied Phee said he was surprised by the move to detain his client, adding that the latter had extended his full cooperation to the MACC.
"I have no idea why he is being detained, he has come to the MACC headquarters on his own and now they say he has to be detained," he told reporters outside the MACC office today.
Rayer added that Phee would be taken to the Penang High Court tomorrow to be remanded in connection with the probe.
Earlier today, an MACC team raided Phee's office on the 54th floor of Komtar.
Five MACC personnel who arrived at 11.30am, spent about an hour in Phee's office going through documents and letters.
Yesterday, officers from the MACC, Inland Revenue Board (IRB), Immigration Department and the Department of Environment (DOE) raided the factory located inside an oil palm estate near Kampung Sungai Lembu.
A separate MACC team also went to the Seberang Perai Municipal Council headquarters in Bandar Perda on the same day.
