MACC seize documents pertaining illegal factory from MPSP

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today seized several documents from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) office in Perda City, here in connection with an investigations on a factory allegedly operating illegally in Sungai Lembu for the past 10 years.
A team of MACC officers arrived at the MPSP building at about 10.30am and left the local authority's office with some documents about three hours later.
According to a source, the documents were seized to assist investigation into of a wood pellet processing plant allegedly operating without a valid permit on agricultural land.
"The MACC also arrested the 70-year-old factory supervisor. He was taken to the MACC office in Seberang Prai to have his statement recorded," he said, adding that also involved in the operation were the Immigration Department, Department of Environment and the Inland Revenue Board.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Azam Baki, when contacted confirmed the operation, and said investigations were ongoing.
The issue regarding the illegal factory was raised by Penanti assemblyman Norlela Ariffin during a state assembly sitting.
She claimed that many illegal plants were operating in Penanti and no action was taken by the DAP-led state government.
Some of the factories, she said, did not comply with safety guidelines, as well environmental procedures. — Bernama
