Penang govt will not protect anyone involved in corruption: Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government's stand in combating grafts in the state is clear and it will not protect anyone who are found guilty.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pix) said his DAP-led state government will not cover any wrongdoing committed by state officials and will support any actions that will be taken against the wrongdoer.
He however stressed investigations should be fair and the law should apply to anyone regardless of political affiliation.
"Our stand is clear, if Phee (Phee Boon Poh) is found guilty, we will support any action taken against him," he said when addressing the crowd who attended a vigil organised to show solidarity to Phee in front of state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters.
He nevertheless defended Phee whom he believes is innocent, did not receive any money or has any personal interests in the illegal carbon filter factory that is currently under investigation.
About 100 people mostly Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters attended a vigil in front of the state MACC headquarters last night in a sign of solidarity with the state executive council.
Those present included Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow, Penang Deputy Chief Minister 2 P. Ramasamy, and other state executive councilors.
Also present were members from PH coalition such as PKR, Amanah and Bersatu who braved the rain during the vigil.
The vigil ended at 11.30 pm and the crowd gradually dispersed peacefully.
"I will leave MACC to investigate the matter and I urge Phee to remain calm," added Lim.
Earlier Phee's counsel RSN Rayer said he was told by MACC that his client will be probed under Section 23 of the MACC Act for allegedly abusing his public office position for gratification.
The Sungai Puyu state assemblyman was detained after giving his statement at the MACC headquarters at 2.40pm yesterday.
The arrest was believed to be in connection with an illegal factory which produces carbon filters at Sungai Lembu, Bukit Mertajam following multiple raids by the MACC on Thursday.
Also arrested were a 70-year-old manager and his 37-year old son who is also director of the company.
