KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old car wash worker is facing the gallows after he was arrested during a drugs operation just after midnight on Sunday.
Kuala Lumpur narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID) chief ACP Adnan Azizon said police seized a total of 9.066kg of heroin valued at RM225,000 from the suspect.
"He was caught at about 1.30am behind a mall at the city centre after police observed his movements for 45 minutes following a tip-off.
"Once we picked him up, police did a check in his car and found 20 translucent plastic begs containing heroin," he told a media conference at KL police contingent headquarters here today.
Adnan said police are in the midst of checking with the Road Transport Department (RTD) to ascertain the owner of the vehicle where the drugs were found.
The suspect has been remanded until Friday under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Meanwhile, on a separate case, Adnan said police arrested a married couple and seized 2,950 Ecstacy pills from them at a condominium unit in Taman Maluri, Cheras here on Aug 11.
Adnan said a police team from the Cheras NCID arrested the couple, aged 46 and 28, at their house.
The drugs were found in their house.
"The combined weight of the drugs was 856gm with a street value of RM17,826. We believe the husband and the Vietnamese wife have been active (in the illegal trade) for three months.
"The Ecstasy pills were meant for local consumption ... you know, the pills are party drugs," he added.
The couple have been remanded and both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence on conviction.
