KUANTAN: A total of RM50.6 million in aid has been disbursed to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Pahang, from 2014 to June this year.
State Women and Family Development, Communications and Multimedia Committee chairman Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin said PWDs from the Malay community received the most assistance, totalling RM34.34 million, followed by the Chinese (RM9.21 million), Indians (RM4.4 million) and other races (RM2.6 million).
In addition, Shahaniza said the Pahang Social Welfare Department declined 6,933 requests for assistance in the same period for various reasons, including applications from non-Malaysians.
"Other factors (for rejection) include the income of applicants and their households being above the poverty line, as well as investigations revealing that the applicants are (financially) well off, and not in need of assistance," she said at the Pahang State Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang here, today.
She was replying to a question from Sim Chon Siang (PKR-Teruntum) who wanted to know the amount of assistance which had been given to the disabled community, and also the number of applications which had been rejected, along with the reasons. — Bernama
