PETALING JAYA: The nation's 60th National Day celebrations is set to be a trip down memory lane, with the historic re-enactment of the first independence day celebration in 1957.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said Dataran Merdeka will be set up to look like Stadium Merdeka 60 years ago.
He added that 'Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa' has been chosen as the theme for this year's celebration to showcase the importance of unity in a multiracial country.
"As the world is rushing to move forward to attain progress, we sometimes forget the fundamentals of past leaders who struggled to free our country from the colonists. Our children might be unaware of this.
"Hence, we want to raise awareness among Malaysians that independence is not an easy feat to achieve. It is vital that Malaysians feel indebted to the sacrifices of past leaders who fought for the country's independence," he said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak will deliver his national day address on Aug 30 at 4pm in Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur and the early address is to accommodate the Merdeka eve celebrations which will coincide with the closing ceremony of the 2017 SEA Games at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil from 8pm onwards.
