Customs Department seizes 150kg of drugs worth RM11m

SERDANG: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) scored a huge success today when it seized more than 150kg of methamphetamine worth almost RM11million with the arrest of seven people at the Bukit Serdang Industrial Park, Seri Kembangan on Monday.
Officers of the RMCD's anti-narcotics enforcement department found the drugs in six sacks marked as industrial magnesium sulphate which is commonly used in the agricultural industry.
The raiding party held a 40-year-old local man who is believed to be the mastermind behind the case and six others, namely five Bangladeshis and a Nepali, aged between 22 and 43.
Sources revealed that at about 6pm, the RMCD team that was carrying out surveillance on a storage premises in the area spotted the six foreigners unloading the sacks from a container.
The team laid an ambush soon after and on questioning the foreigners, the customs officers were led to the main suspect who was in a pick-up truck at a carpark not far from the store.
On checking the sacks, the officers found the narcotics concealed in six sacks.
Sources told theSun that the amount of drugs could be much higher as there were almost 800 similar sacks in the building which are being examined.
All seven suspects were remanded today for investigations under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act - an offence that carries the death sentence upon conviction.
It is learnt that the RMCD is expected to hold a press conference soon to reveal more details of the bust.
Customs director-general Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy said in a press conference that the seven men have been remanded for seven days starting today.
"Investigations are still ongoing to find out the mastermind," he said.
"The drugs were brought in from Chennai," he said.
He said that this is the 20th import of magnesium sulphate, adding that this is their Modus Operandi and that they are tracking the other 19 imports.
