ALOR STAR: The first phase of the Langkawi International Airport RM89 million expansion project will begin on Sept 1, the State Assembly sitting was told today.
State education, transport and non-governmental organisations committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said this phase entailed enlarging the parking area and was due for completion on Oct 15.
"Meanwhile, the second phase which includes enlarging the arrival hall, toilets, commercial terminal, prayer rooms and driveway (for vehicles to go into the main terminal building) will begin on Oct 15 and be completed by Aug 31 next year," he said in reply to a question from Nor Saidi Nanyan (BN-Kuah) who enquired on the progress of the plans for the project.
The project was approved by the National Economic Council Meeting on June 5 which was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, with Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) appointed to implement it.
Replying to an additional question from Nor Saidi on whether an aerobridge would be built at the airport, Tajul Urus said it was difficult as it involved renovating the structure and design of the main building of the airport.
"There are plans by the MAHB itself, but it would drastically increase the costs to RM300 million," he said. — Bernama
