Ministry in final stage of preparing commercial solid waste management regulations

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government is in the final stage of preparing the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management (Scheme for Commercial Solid Waste) Regulations 2017.
Deputy Minister Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique said the regulations were being formulated in an effort to regulate commercial and industrial solid waste, as well as institutional waste.
"This is to ensure that solid waste is managed properly and does not pollute the environment," she said in reply to Senator Datuk Fahariyah Md Nordin during question time at the Dewan Negara sitting here today.
Fahariyah had wanted to know the measures and actions taken by the government to ensure that industrial waste disposal at landfills did not pollute the country's rivers or raw water sources.
Halimah said at present, the solid waste disposal at industrial premises was managed by the premises owners, mostly by appointing an industrial solid waste collection service provider registered with the National Solid Waste Management Department to dispose the waste at landfills.
Meanwhile, in reply to Datuk Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif on the upgrading of the sanitary landfill site at Sungai Udang, Malacca, which is in critical condition, Halimah said a total of RM16.5 million had been allocated to build two additional cells at the landfill. — Bernama
