KUANTAN: The Army's Merdeka Run will be made an annual event, said Army chief Gen Datuk Seri Zulkiple Kassim.

He said with the impact it has made in raising the patriotic spirit, making it an annual affair was the way to go.

"We find the people are so excited about this run. It has served as a uniting factor and boosted the patriotic spirit among Malaysians. So, we feel it should be made an annual affair to celebrate the Merdeka Month, he told reporters after witnessing a flag handing over ceremony for the eastern zone in Padang Kemunting here today.

The run involves three zones, the other two being the northern and southern zones. Some 3,000 soldiers are involved in the run which will culminate in Kuala Lumpur on Merdeka eve (Aug 30).

The eastern zone leg started in Tumpat, traversed through Terengganu and the national flag was handed over to the Pahang leg runners today. — Bernama
