GEORGE TOWN: An accountant working for a private company here suffered losses amounting to RM80,000 when her house in Pesara Mahsuri 5, Bayan Lepas was broken into.
The victim discovered the incident after coming back from work at about 6.30pm on Friday (Aug 18).
According to South West district police chief Supt A.A. Anbalagan, the 43-year-old victim had locked her house's doors and all lights were switched off before leaving for work at 8am.
However, upon returning from work later in the evening, the victim found the lights in her house were switched on.
"The victim entered the house and after some checking discovered that her valuables were missing."
"Based on the victim's statement, seven branded watches, worth a total of RM58,000, three gold necklaces worth RM7,000 and some cash, amounting to RM15,000, had been stolen," he told reporters today (Aug 19).
Anbalagan added, based on initial investigation, police believe the thieves entered the premise via the ceiling.
He said the police tried to check the house's closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage but the decoder of the CCTV had been taken by the suspects. The alarm system of the premise was also not activated.
"A neighbour claimed that he heard some noise in the house but assumed workers were repairing the roof at about 2pm." he said.
The case is classified under Section 457 of the Penal Code for house-breaking and theft.
