GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Siamese Association is honoured to have been recognised by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) during a heritage festival held last month.
Its chairman Boon Leua Aroonratana was on cloud nine after the Siamese community received accolades from the prestigious festival.
To add to the joy, Boon Leau and the association's treasurer Kusorn Chai Tong also received awards during state's investiture ceremony in conjunction with Penang Yang-diPertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas's 79th birthday celebrations.
"It is worth to celebrate," he said in a press conference at the Wat Nai Siamese temple in Jalan Masjid Negri.
He added the Siamese community had existed in Penang even before it was founded by Sir Francis Light dating back in 1786.
Boon Leua added the community will strive to move forward with the recognition received and hoped the Siamese village in Pulau Tikus will be preserved as a heritage settlement.
Earlier, Boon Leua attended the "Khao Phansa", also known as the Buddhist Lent event with the temple's chief abbot Phra Kru Wakchikrathammaphiand.
He said this ceremony attended by hundreds of devotees started on July 10 and will end on Oct 5 marking a three-month "rain treat observance".
He added monks will have to stay in their monastery during this time while special prayers will be held daily.
