SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government should be open and not overreact following the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into an alleged misappropriation case involving the Mentri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and Universiti Selangor (Unisel).
Member of Special Parliamentary Committee on Corruption, Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said, as an independent body, MACC would certainly launch the probe after being tipped off over the case and not due to political pressure.
"The MACC is just doing its job. I hope the opposition will not be dramatic and politicise the commission's investigation on Unisel and MBI. The state government must be professional before asking the MACC to act like one.
"My advice is, do not make allegations against the MACC and issue emotional statements. Instead, act in a positive manner and display maturity in politics," he said in a statement here today.
Irmohizam, who is also Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament, said such unfounded allegations by the Selangor government and certain quarters were deemed unnecessary as the opposition itself had asked the commission to take similar action for every report that was lodged.
"Does the MACC take action as they like? I am certain that they are not because when the MACC investigates, BN (Barisan Nasional) has never criticised (them). The one who claims that the commission has been playing a 'game' is the opposition," he said.
Last Tuesday, the MACC began its probe into the alleged misappropriation involving an RM16 million payment by MBI, the state government's subsidiary, to a private company.
Subsequently, the commission raided five locations namely, the Unisel campuses here and in Bestari Jaya; the private company's offices in Desa Pandan, Kuala Lumpur and Bestari Jaya; as well as the MBI's office in Section 14 here.
The private company, which was said to be responsible for developing and managing student accommodation at Unisel's main campus in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, was alleged to have received payments from MBI despite termination of the company's contract in 2012. — Bernama
