Housewife charged with transmitting false news on Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge with improper use of network service by knowingly initiating the transmission of false news through a Facebook account.
Siti Norlidah Mohd Zin, 47, was alleged to have used a Facebook account using the name "Yunus Yatim to transmit the false news with intention to annoy others at 12.57pm last July 21.
The link was read at Starbucks, AEON Alpha Angle, Bandar Baru Wangsa Maju here at 10am last Aug 1.
The charge, under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, provides a fine of up to RM50,000, or imprisonment for up to a year, or both, and shall also be liable to a further RM1,000 fine for very day during which the offence is continued after conviction, if found guilty.
Prosecuting officer from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Norhani Mohd Adzha, offered bail at RM3,000 in one surety.

However, Sit Norlidah, who was unrepresented, requested for a lower bail, saying that she was not working and had seven children while her husband only earned RM1,000 a month as a driver.
