Lawn bowls' men's pair achieves targeted fourth gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's lawn bowls squad today completed their target of four gold medals when they beat the Philippines 20-13 through the men's pairs event in the final at the National Lawn Bowls Centre, Bukit Kiara here.
The national squad, guided by coaches Simon Botha and Zuraidi Puteh comprised Fairul Izwan Abd Muin and Muhammad Hizlee Abdul Rais while the Philippines was represented by Marcelito Pancho and Morales Angelo.
The final match which took almost three hours began with Malaysia claiming the opening point 1-0 before adding point by point to lead the opponent until the last match.
The skill of both the national athletes in hurling the ball proved to be an important factor for winning the additional gold as targeted by the lawn bowls squad, which was four gold medals.
The match ended with Malaysia increasing the score with three additional points at the ends 15 while the Philippines added one point at the ends 17 with the final point 20-13.

Earlier, three gold medals were won in lawn bowls through the men's and women's triples and women's fours.
Muhammad Hizlee, when met after the event, expressed his happiness and appreciation to everyone who had given non-stop moral support to succeed in the event.
"My efforts and sacrifice all this while had been fruitful ... we went through training for a long time and the win today was most meaningful," said the 28-year-old athlete.
Muhammad Hizlee had previously collected the gold medal at the World Champion of Champions (2012) and the silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (2014). — Bernama
