Post-Merdeka generation told to equip themselves with knowledge

KOTA KINABALU: The post-Merdeka (Independence) generation have been urged to equip themselves with all-round knowledge including technology to shield themselves from elements that could destroy the country's harmony.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said it was not easy to defend the country's independence in the borderless world of today.
He said although the country was already free from colonialism, the independence that the country had achieved should not be taken for granted as a more potent modern form of military aggression could surreptitiously take control.
Speaking at a Merdeka programme in Putatan here today, he reminded the post-Merdeka generation that independence was not just about flying the jalur gemilang (Malaysian flag), merdeka acclamations or public holiday.
"More importantly, it is to internalise the essence and appreciate the meaning of independence," he said.
Yahya said the government was also banking on the people to maintain unity despite their different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. — Bernama
