American killed in shooting near Haiti's capital: police

PORT-AU-PRINCE: A US citizen has been shot and killed as he was getting into a car in an upscale suburb of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, police sources told AFP Sunday.
The US State Department said it was aware of the report but could say no more due to American privacy rules.
Haitian police said the incident happened around 8pm Saturday (0000 GMT Sunday) in Petionville, a busy neighborhood on a hill overlooking the capital.
A Haitian bystander was also shot and wounded during the attack and is receiving treatment under police protection in a local hospital.
A source in the police forensic unit said the American, who has not been formally identified, died immediately in what appears to have been a deliberate murder.
Spent cartridges from handguns of two different calibers – 9-mm and .45-caliber – were found at the scene, the source added.
Petionville is a lively district of restaurants, markets and high-class hotels, popular with international visitors and Port-au-Prince's business elite.
But it is not immune from the criminal and political violence that plagues other parts of the city, capital of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. — AFP
