ALOR SETAR: The police plan to set up an integrated checkpoint at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex when it commences 24-hour operations, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
He said the state police, to be led by Kedah Police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff, would meet with the stakeholders to finalise the implementation of the plan to facilitate the ICQS operations on Jan 1, 2019.
"Previously the public have to go through various checks at the ICQS at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Malaysian Border Control Agency and police, which caused them inconveniences," he told a media conference here today.
Khalid said 79 out of the 149 Royal Malaysia Police new job applications in preparation for the new 24-hour operations of the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS had been approved for the first phase.
Earlier he addressed the state police personnel at the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters in conjunction with his farewell tour prior to his retirement on Sept 5.
In another development, Khalid said he was proud to note that the Kedah police had managed to record a decrease in the overall crime index to 8.6% from January until now compared to the same period last year.
He said violent crime cases had declined by 36 per cent, which was a significant achievement as a result of action taken to curb gangsterism through Ops Cantas.
"Operations have been conducted throughout Kedah, particularly in Sungai Petani and we will make more arrests against individuals involved in gangsterism related crimes," he added. — Bernama
