More animal bite cases reported in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak reported 35 animal bite cases today, raising to 3,064 the number of animal bite cases in the state since April 1, according to the Sarawak Health Department.
It said in a statement that 19 of the fresh bites were reported in the Serian Division, eight in the Sri Aman Division and two in the Samarahan Division.
Thirty-one of the cases involved bites by pet animals, namely dogs (18 cases), cats (12) and monkey (one) while four cases involved wild or stray animals, one of each by a dog, a cat, a rat, and a squirrel.
The statement said that altogether 1,100 people had been administered the rabies vaccine.
It also said that a total of 35,253 pet animals, comprising dogs, cats and other animals, had been vaccinated. They included 91 dogs and eight cats that were vaccinated at the Serian and Sri Aman veterinary service offices.
Rabies has taken the lives of five people in Sarawak this year. One person is under treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital. — Bernama
