GEORGETOWN: One of Penang's most famous ice kacang (shaved ice dessert) stalls at the New World Park food court in Swatow Lane will be moving to a new premises.
Lee Wah Chai, 32, the fourth-generation operator, said they will be moving to a shoplot within the New World Park itself.
"We will open on Sept 1," he told theSun.
His great-grandfather, Lee Kar Tee, first served the local delicacy in 1923 in Swatow Lane outside the "Sin Sei Kai" (The New World) open-air entertainment centre.
Kar Tee handed the business to his two sons, Soo Hun anf Soo Eng.
Eng Lai, the son of Soo Hun and father of Wah Chai, continued operating the business on a push cart by the roadside at Swatow Lane before moving to the refurbished New World Park food court nearby 12 years ago.
"We'll be moving from the food court with a heavy heart," said Eng Lai, who has been selling the icy delicacy since he was 15 years old.
Wah Chai said the new outlet would be a fusion of old-style coffee shop with a contemporary cafe feel.
"The plan is to provide dining options from breakfast to supper and focus on serving healthy food, like fruits instead of oily food," said Wah Chai.
"We want people to be healthy, and also provide them another choice for supper. We want to keep our regular customers happy and attract a younger crowd to enjoy our ice kacang."
