BUTTERWORTH: The mother of the first Merdeka baby at Bagan Specialist Centre is glad she delivered her baby today as it is a historic occasion.
The 35-year-old Koo Eua Fern, who is working as a Human Resources officer, said she hoped her baby boy would grow up healthy.
"I did not expect to deliver my second son today (Aug 31) because the expected childbirth date was on Sept 11.
"Maybe my boy cannot wait to see this world," she told theSun today, adding that her husband, Teoh Hang Chun, had gone back home to Kulim to pack some clothes for her and the baby.
Koo said she was admitted to the specialist centre at 2am when she felt stomach pains about 1am today.
She added she felt happy as her second son, weighing 2.85kg, was a Merdeka baby at 4.26am.
"My five-year-old boy's birthday is Sept 15. He was almost a Malaysia baby in 2012," she said.
Another mother Khee Wai Yin, 31, had delivered her first child at 8.15am.
Khee's husband Tan Wei Kang, 38, said Wai Yin had given birth earlier than the actual delivery date which was estimated on Sept 21.
Tan said the family welcomes his Merdeka baby boy with joy.
"It is a unique and historic occasion. I am so happy that my wife and son both are well now," he said, adding that Wai Yin was tired, therefore she needed to take more rest.
The grandfather, Khee Ah Lick, 64, said he was glad to welcome his first grandchild as a Merdeka baby boy.
Ah Lick said he told his daughter it was better to deliver the child on Aug 31 when Wai Yin told him that the actual delivery was estimated on Sept 21 during a family gathering.
"I did not expect what I said to become true," he said.
A spokesperson of Bagan Specialist Centre said a total of four Merdeka babies were born in the centre this year.
She said besides the first two Merdeka babies, there were another two mothers who delivered on Merdeka Day.
