PETALING JAYA: The two retired armed personnel who raised the Jalur Gemilang on the historic day in 1957 re-enacted the historic moment today.
Sixty years later, Lieutenant Commander Mohd. Sharif Kalam and Warrant Officer Oliver Culvelt Samuel were given the honour to once again raise the Malaysian flag at Dataran Merdeka.
"Although the ceremony went on just for a few minutes, but for them that moment remains for the rest of their lives.
"Today we honour them to raise the Jalur Gemilang once again, as they did 60 years ago," Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said on his Facebook page.
He posted a picture of him walking alongside the two veterans during the celebration today, witnessed by tens of thousands of high spirited Malaysians.

"With two people who raised the Jalur Gemilang for the first time on that important date in 1957," he said.
