Student drowns during family picnic

GERIK: A form two student drowned while on a picnic with his family at a waterfall in Kampung Kenayat near here yesterday.
A search and rescue team retrieved the body of Muhammad Afiq Ishak, of Felda Papulot, Lenggong, from the bottom of the waterfall in Lata Kulim at 2.15pm.
Gerik police chief Supt Ismail Che Isa said the 14-year-old student of the Pengkalan Hulu Mara Junior Science College had gone to the waterfall for fishing and swimming with 15 other family members about three hours earlier.
He said the victim's father told the police the student was swimming in the deeper area of the waterfall when strong water currents caused him to disappear underwater.
"The father and several others went to his rescue but to no avail," he said in a statement here. — Bernama
