KUALA LUMPUR: It was an emotional farewell for outgoing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, as he was given a grand send-off in a parade today.
The retiring top cop arrived at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here at 4pm with his wife Puan Sri Imran Ibrahim as the afternoon turned cloudy, hours after officially handing over duties to his successor Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
Also present for the parade were Fuzi, his wife Azizah Hamdi, and deputy IGP Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
In keeping with tradition, Khalid inspected the flag-bearers and guard-of-honour, which was followed by the raising of the Jalur Gemilang and singing of the Negaraku anthem.
It was then followed by a march-past by the different police units and assets, including a fly-past by four of its helicopters, comprising close to 1,000 policemen.
However, it was the performances by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) marching band and orchestra that got the attention of the 3,500 guests, and Khalid himself.
During the performance of You Raise Me Up, the lead singer Corporal Abang Faizul Abang Bujang's voice audibly broke midway, as emotions got to him and some among the crowd.
Another eye-catching act was the band's version of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal, where one of the band members danced ala the famed pop singer and even did a "moonwalk".
In his final act, Khalid also conducted the PDRM band to Frank Sinatra's My Way, in what was a very emotional performance.
This was followed by a poem recital titled "Noktah Terakhir Perwira Bangsa", and a final march past by the guard-of-honour.
Khalid then left the parade on board PDRM's open top ceremony vehicle together with Imran and their grandson Farish Haikal.
