Jalur Gemilang flies at Elbrus Peak, Russia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Jalur Gemilang flew proudly at the peak of Mount Elbrus, Russia after the Kembara Srikandi Prihatin (KSP) expedition arrived there at 4.15pm (Malaysian time) yesterday.
In a statement issued today, Puteri Umno head Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said KSP expedition leader Ummu Farah Haidar Zulkifli, 30, was its sole representative to conquer the mountain which stands at 5,642m, in conjunction with the 2017 National Day celebration.
"Felicitations must also be given to the other KSP climbers for completing the mission to Mount Elbrus, even though they did not reach the peak due to bad weather.
"Although Ummu Farah was the only one to reach the peak, the success was also that of the other five climbers who were with her throughout the climb to not give up but to try reach the highest point. However, their mission ended at different heights due to physical limitations," she said.
The other five climbers are Nurul Huda Shamsuddin, 31, Nir Azmin Adnan, 34, Fairul Asmaini Mohd Pilus, 35, Fazilah Abd Manan, 41 and Ren'ee Aziz Ahmad, 56, who is a breast cancer survivor.
The expedition, organised by the National Adventurers Association with the cooperation of Puteri Umno, left for Russia on Aug 23. It was the highlight of KSP's campaign to promote a healthy lifestyle through outdoor and extreme activities among Malaysians.
Mas Ermieyati, who is also Tourism and Culture Deputy Minister, said Puteri Umno was also grateful to the Prime Minister's Department for helping to make the dream of Malaysian women to conquer the highest mountain in Europe come through.
She said the latest information received from the National Adventurers Association was that all the climbers and tourists had been brought out safely by helicopters sent by the Russian government to the areas hit by the mudslide, near the mountain.
The climbers, she added, were on their way to Mineralnye Vody Airport, Stavropol Krai before catching a flight to Moscow tonight.
Yesterday, the Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that 19 Malaysians who were still on their way to the peak of Mount Elbrus, Russia, were stranded due to a mudslide which hit the nearby Terskol village on Friday. — Bernama
