Lives of four icons of peace to be discussed at Gandhi lecture

KUALA LUMPUR: A lecture to be held on Oct 2 at the Royal Lake Club, here, to commemorate the 148th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi will discuss the philosophy and teachings of four icons of peace.
The icons are Gandhi (India), Nelson Mandela (South Africa), Martin Luther King Jr. (USA) and Daisaku Ikeda (Japan).
Trustee of the Gandhi Memorial Trust (GMT), S. Radhakrishnan said all these four world leaders were inspired by the philosophy and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, adding that the commemoration of Gandhi's birthday was also celebrated as the United Nations International Day of Non-Violence.
Radhakrishnan said prominent international speaker, Dr Mohamed M. Keshavjee, would provide insights into dealing with the relevance of Gandhi's teachings in the present day during the lecture which would start at 5pm.
He noted that the grand uncle of Mohamed Keshavjee was a close friend of Ghandi and both fought together against apartheid in South Africa.
The event will be officiated by Stefan Priesner, United Nations resident coordinator for Malaysia.
The late Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born on Oct 2, 1869, led India to independence in 1947 and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom in the country. His unique non-violent movement or Satyagraha won the admiration of people across the world.
