Not enough local beef during Aidiladha: LPP chairman

SEREMBAN: There was a shortage of local beef supply due to the current Aidiladha festive season, and the government has had to resort to imports to keep up with the demand, says Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) chairman Tan Sri Zainal Dahalan.
"The main cause (of the shortage) is that breeders are facing problems in getting calves for breeding, which are currently sourced from Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia.
"Morover, the improvement in the Chinese economy has led the country to aggressively import cows for breeding, thus affecting our local breeders," he told reporters at the 2017 LPP Premier Korban programme organised by LPP's Welfare, Sports and Recreation Council at Masjid Kariah Batu 10, Labu near here today.
Also present were LPP director-general Datuk Mohd Salim Taha and state agriculture and agro-based industry action committee chairman Datuk Hasim Rusdi.
Zainal said LPP was also looking at initiatives to increase cattle production, including encouraging young farmers to breed dairy cattle. — Bernama
