Constantly monitor children's use of social media: State exco (Updated)

MALACCA: Parents should constantly monitor their children's use of the social media to prevent them from being influenced by matters that could pollute their mind and sense of identity, says state information, communications and cooperatives committee chairman Datuk Latiff Tamby Chik.
He said parental alertness when monitoring their children's interaction on the social media could help provide early intervention of social ills.
"This effort should not be taken lightly as even with monitoring, there are still cases of children who are involved in cyber crimes as they can easily access pornography websites.
"We see children as young as 12, uploading sexy photos of themselves on the social media for public display," he told reporters after launching the "Seminar Media Sosial Peringkat Negeri Melaka 2017" programme at the Malacca International Trade Centre here today.
Also present were Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) southern region director Roszeta Kassim and state information department assistant director Nurhasnani Abdul Wahab.

The programme aims to instil understanding and awareness of the spread of false information on the social media and its impact towards the country and society, while exposing the public to cyber crimes that occur there.
Latiff also advised parents to be wary of paedophiles in virtual sites who preyed on children.
He said until December last year, a total of 244 computing and child pornography websites were banned by MCMC, with the support of all parties, including the Royal Malaysia Police. — Bernama
