CYBERJAYA: Newly-appointed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun has pledged to be proactive in addressing pertinent issues in the country, which includes death in police custody.
Mohamad Fuzi, who succeeded Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar who went on mandatory retirement on Monday, pledged his commitment by looking into the matter (death in police custody) seriously, which has often been brought up by Amnesty International Malaysia and several other non-governmental organisations (NGO).
"For a start, we have asked Suhakam to do validation and work together with us to provide certain recommendations on this (death in custody). We will look into this recommendation.
"However, we are facing constraints such as requirement of closed-circuit television cameras (in the lock-up) and budget, which needs to be rectified," he told reporters when met after the launch of Impact Driven Enterprises Accreditation (Idea) at the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (Magic) here today.
Idea was launched by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa. Also present were Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah and Magic Chief Executive Officer Ashran Ghazi.
On the high expectation of NGOs and the opposition to "clean up" the police force, Mohamad Fuzi said he was fully aware of the demand and would definitely look into what was necessarily needed to be done to whatever issues the people in the street were looking at.
"Actually, you have to be fair to me. This is my second day in office. I will handle issues fairly and seriously. I will not take a long time, but give me some time. I will reveal soon on what my priorities are," he added.
On the kidnapping of Pastor Raymond Koh in February, the IGP said the investigation was still ongoing and no stone would be left unturned.
To a question if he would be transparent in sharing latest updates on crime occurrences in the country through social media like Twitter, Mohamad Fuzi said: "I am thinking to open an account but not at the moment ... you need not worry about that." — Bernama
