Malacca wants incinerator project to be expedited

MALACCA: The Malacca state government has urged the federal government to expedite the construction of an incinerator system together with the Phase 2 disposal site at the Sungai Udang Sanitary Disposal Site here.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the implementation of the incinerator system in the coming Phase 3 was too long and would result in the issues and problems related to waste management at the site not being implemented effectively.
"We hope the incinerator can be implemented in phase two as only with this system can the wastes at the disposal site in Malacca be managed well.
"I fear when phase two of the site is completed, the same issues will still crop up resulting in poor management of the wastes," he told reporters after launching the "Green Cities Conference: Leveraging Regional Cooperation and Integration for a Green Growth Cities Network in Asean" programme here today.
Commenting further, Idris said the incinerator system could not only solve the issue of garbage management at the site in question, but could also tackle the foul smell and help generate energy from the disposal of the wastes.
Meanwhile, he said the state government would formulate a policy on the planting of 100 trees for every tree felled as a measure to maintain the greenery in Malacca and sustain its status as a pioneer city in green technology.
He said the policy would be co-ordinated by four local councils in the state including in terms of enforcement and legal actions against individuals or quarters who flouted the policy.
"With the availability of the policy, the consent of the local authority is required for the felling of any tree. Malacca is still lacking in greenery ... so this policy will help to maintain the balance of nature," he said. — Bernama
