SFC clarifies on release of huge crocodile back into Limbang River

KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) had released a 4.9m (16 ft.) crocodile back to the Limbang River on Sunday because it did not receive any prior complaint of any menace or threat posed by the presence of crocodiles in that area.
SFC, in a statement, today said it also took into account a survey carried in May that revealed the crocodile population density was about one reptile per kilometre on the stretch of the Limbang River from the river mouth to Limbang town, which was nowhere near the level where culling might be deemed necessary.
The statement was issued due to numerous enquiries received by the corporation, questioning the rationale for the release of the huge crocodile caught by the Fire and Rescue Department after it was found wandering inside a tyre repair shop in Limbang on Sunday.
"SFC will continue to closely monitor the croc situation in the area concerned, and will also install more warning signages where crocs are most often seen; these include Jetty Tamu Limbang, Medamit, Kampung Lubuk Piasau and Kubong," it added. — Bernama
