Irresponsible statement by Jufazli: MPT president

TAWAU: The Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) today hit out at Facebook account owner Jufazli Shi Ahmad for claiming that the government, including MBT, master-minded the fire which often broke out in Tawau.
MPT chairman Alijus Sipil said the statement made in an hour-long video recording was merely a baseless and irresponsible allegation.
"MPT, as the third-tier government, is the party responsible in dealing with such a disaster and as such we do not want such a fire to happen often," he told reporters today after visiting the site of a fire which broke out in Kampung Titingan here yesterday.
Alijus said he had instructed his officers to lodge a police report, as well as to seek legal advice on the action that could be taken against the Facebook account holder concerned.
He said among the reasons for the fire in Tawau was because the houses were built close to one another.
In yesterday's fire, more than 300 people in Kampung Titingan were left only with the clothes on their back. The fire destroyed 60 houses.
The victims are being provided temporary shelter at the Kampung Titingan Multi-Purpose Hall, said Alijus. — Bernama
