Malaysian Para Asean athletes ready to break records

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian para athletes are aiming to shine and break world records on home soil at this upcoming 2017 Asean Para Games.
Malaysian Asean Para Games chef de mission, Datuk Subramaniam Raman Nair said the squad, currently camping at Seri Pacific Hotel until the day of the tournament, had been preparing since after the Singapore Asean Para Games in 2015.
"We have done all we can and now we are focusing on strengthening their mental and emotional state, and final tuning of their team spirit.
"We are looking at breaking world records here. I believe we can do it," he said during the meet-and-greet session for the para athletes with Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim at Seri Pacific Hotel, here, today.
Four venues, Bukit Jalil, Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), Nilai velodrome and Sunway Mega Lanes have been chosen as the venues for the events and all admissions are free.

Malaysian Paralympic star sprinter and 2016 Rio Paralympic gold medallist, Muhamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi will be one of the star athletes at the Para Games here from Sept 17 to 23.
A total of 326 national athletes will be taking part in 16 sports disciplines in this ninth edition of the Games.
On the athletes' performance, Rohani was positive that they could reach their highest level and repeat the success of the 29th SEA Games athletes.
"We can do this. Our athletes have shined at the Olympic level and I believe we can repeat it here, and even do better," she said.
Rohani also announced that the ministry would be naming the homes of special children under her ministry's purview with the names of those who excel in sports.
"Currently, we have named four homes with our Rio Paralympian medallists in four states and we hope to name more after the SEA Games athletes who break the world records," she said.
The four welfare homes are Taman Sinar Harapan Ridzuan Puzi, Jitra, Kedah; Rumah Kanak-Kanak Mini Siti Noor Radiah Ismail, Ulu Tiram, Johor; Rumah Kanak-Kanak Abdul Latif Romly, Arau, Perlis; and Taman Sinar Harapan Ziyad Zulkefli in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. — Bernama
