GEORGE TOWN: The long arm of the law caught up with a fisherman who was on the run when he was detained today in connection with the rape of a New Zealand tourist.
Police detained the 28-year-old at his house in Bayan Lepas about 1.30am after managing to trace his motorcycle.
In the 11.45am incident on Sunday, the 26-year-old tourist was on her way back to her hotel in Tanjung Bungah.
She was then grabbed by the suspect who overpowered her and allegedly raped her behind the alley of a condominium.
The suspect fled the scene on his motorcycle after a passerby shouted at them after seeing what was happening.
It is understood the victim later lodged a police report at a nearby police station.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar confirmed the arrest of the suspect when contacted by reporters.
He said the suspect tested positive for drug abuse and had confessed to the offence.
"Further investigations will continue," he said.
The suspect has since been remanded for six days to assist in investigations for rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
