MBPP yet to issue compound since waste segregation programme started

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has yet to issue compounds to any household since the waste segregation programme came into force on Sept 1.
Mayor Datuk Maimunah Mohd Shariff said the council has inspected 224 high-rise buildings and 136 have already adhered to the waste segregation policy.
She said the rest needed time to enforce it but visits made by council officers recently found 10 high-rise buildings have already complied with the ruling.
"We give them time," she said at a press conference when asked whether compounds had been issued since implementation of the programme.
From early this month, households that failed to segregate their waste risk facing a RM250 compound.
Persistent offenders will be hauled up to court where a fine of up to RM2,000, a year's jail or both can be imposed.
Maimunah said notices to remind households to separate their waste had been issued while compounds will be the last resort.
