JOHOR BARU: Backed by the determination to achieve success against obstacles faced, Nurhani Sofea Nazaruddin, a diabetic student of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kompleks Uda, Bandar Baru Uda here, sat for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) this morning.
At the age of three, Nurhani Sofea, the second of four siblings, suffered from a damaged pancreas and since then had to undergo insulin treatment four times a day as well as follow a strict diet regime.
Unlike her friends who sat for UPSR today, the 12-year-old began her day with an insulin injection before taking breakfast and sitting for the exam.
Her mother, Noraini Ismail, 45, said this was also the daily routine her daughter underwent before starting her day at school.
"My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes when she was small as she frequently suffered fevers. Following a medical check up which revealed that the fevers resulted in pancreatic damage, she has had to take insulin injections every time she wants to eat," she told reporters when met at SK Kompleks Uda today.
Noraini, who is also a Mathematics teacher at the school said she was forced to stop Nurhani Sofea's religious education at Sekolah Agama Bandar Baru Uda in February to enable her daughter to focus on the UPSR examination.
Meanwhile, Nur Amalina Noordin, 12, who is a dyslexic student at the same school as Nurhani Sofea, said she felt daunted in sitting for UPSR in her condition but was prepared.
Nur Amalina's mother, Norazah A. Samad, 44, said although her daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of seven, she had a strong passion for learning.
"Teaching children with disabilities like my daughter requires a different teaching style. We need to be supportive of them as the way they acquire knowledge is different from normal children," she said, adding that the support obtained from school teachers and parents also enabled her to teach Nur Amalina. — Bernama
