PUTRAJAYA: To pursue his interest in volunteerism, a community college student's physical disability has not become an obstacle.
Hairul Hasnawi Jamil, 19, a computer and network system student at the Tanjung Piai Community College, Johor, was among 50 volunteers from various public and private institutions of higher learning (IPTs) who participated in the Yayasan Pelajaran Siswa (YSS) volunteering mission to Laos from Sept 14 to 28.
The youngest of four siblings from Batu Pahat wants to prove that people with disabilities are not as weak and are able to serve the community as others.
"In Laos, I will be stationed in Kampung Ban Samphanna and will teach IT (Information Technology) to the locals," he told reporters at the sending-off ceremony of the volunteer group by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh here today.
The student group will join 50 more student volunteers from Laos who will conduct voluntary activities in three villages, namely Ban Samphanna, Ban Paktone, and Ban Thanasa in Sangthong district, Vientiane.
Meanwhile, Idris said the annual programme organised by YSS, with the cooperation of the ministry was expected to enhance the spirit of volunteerism among IPT students. — Bernama
