GEORGE TOWN: Residents within the inner city of George Town now have a rest and recreational space with the opening of the Armenian Park today.
Penang Island mayor Datuk Maimunah Shariff said the 1,600m² park provided a place for the public to play and organise community activities.
She said the creation of the park, made up of a field and spruced up back lanes near Lebuh Armenian here, was part of efforts to create more green space within the city.
She said the RM2.5 million cost to refurbish the space came from Think City Sdn Bhd and the George Town Conservation Development Corporation (GTCDC).
"Work on upgrading the field started in 2016 while the back lanes were refurbished this year," she said at the opening ceremony with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim said the design of the park was finalised after consultation with the community and stakeholders there.
"I am proud to learn that this project has received a Merit Award by the Malaysian Institute of Planners," he said.
