RM101m allocated to upgrade railway services in Sabah: Pairin

KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government through the Transport Ministry has passed an allocation of RM101 million for the execution of three projects to upgrade railway services in Sabah, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Pairin, who is also state Infrastructure Development Minister said the three projects which involved the upgrading of the railway tracks from Halogilat Beaufort to Tenom, would be provided with three Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) and a study would be conducted on a communications system for the Sabah railway service.
"The study would identify suitable communication gadgets to be used in the effort to further increase security measures along the 134km railway line from Tanjung Aru to Tenom.
"The projects are expected to start this year. The ministry also plans to expand Sabah's railway service network to fulfil the public transportation needs," he said this in his speech when launching the state's National Railway Awareness programme here today.
In the effort to improve railway services in Sabah, Pairin said they had recently launched a new train set which comprised three coaches that operated in the 48km route from Beaufort to Tenom. — Bernama
