KUALA LUMPUR: Six of the victims at the Tahfiz Darul Ittifaqyah in Jalan Datuk Keramat were critically injured after jumping out of the school's top-most floor window.
City police chief commissioner Datuk Amar Singh said it is still premature to tell the cause of the fire.
"The Fire and Rescue Department and police will investigate it thoroughly.
"Some of them who tried to climb and escape were injured critically. Six of them are warded in HKL," he told reporters at a press conference held at the scene.
He added the absence of hinged grills on the second floor was also one of the reason that the victims to be trapped in the room.
When asked about the school's permit, Amar said the investigation team is checking on the matter.
However, when contacted by theSun, a spokesperson from the Education Ministry confirmed that the school is not registered under the ministry.
A neighbour of the school Khairatu Alias, 30 said her roommate woke her up and informed her about the blaze.
"I thought the screams for help was a dream, and it all happen too fast.
"When I look out of my window, there were shadows struggling to exit the school and some of them even jumped out of the window.
"I immediately informed the Fire and Rescue department," she said.
