KOTA KINABALU: Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak today advised young people, particularly students, to master communications technology and gadgets and not allow this technology to dominate them.
He said the use of communications technology, including the various forms of social media, was inevitable because it was associated with today's generation but there would be problems if it was misused.
"Actually, gadgets can be used to widen our network, generate our economy, increase our knowledge. We use gadgets to enhance our livelihood. This is the borderless world, unlike in the past.
"The world of the future will be entirely different from today's. If we do not master it (technology), we will lag behind in the economic and business sectors," he said when speaking at the 'Sehati Sejiwa' (One Heart, One Soul) event at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) here.
Also present at the event was UMS vice-chancellor Prof Dr D. Kamarudin D. Mudin.
Salleh said that in the past, traders required premises to conduct their business but today such business premises were practically no longer necessary because businesses could be conducted online.
He said that as such young people must understand the current developments and look forward to the developments of the future, including the future of the country in 30 years as required by the National Transformation 2050 (TN50).
Salleh also said that the pattern of thinking of only depending on jobs in the public sector should be changed because such employment opportunities would no longer be the same in the future.
Instead, he said, young people should look for jobs outside the ordinary, and communications technology could be fully utilised for this purpose.
At the event, Salleh witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UMS and the Department of Broadcasting, Malaysia, to enhance and expand collaboration in the broadcasting, journalism and technical aspects.
The signatories of the MoU were Prof Dr D. Kamarudin and Department of Broadcasting director-general Datuk Abu Bakar Ab Rahim. — Bernama
