BAM committed to strengthen national para badminton

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is committed in strengthening the country's para badminton sport in achieving the target to be one of the gold medal contributors in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Its president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said a committee led by the national para badminton squad manager Dr Naharuddin Hashim has been established to draft a blueprint towards the Tokyo 2020, and the Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017) 9th Asean Para Games was part of the blueprint's agenda.
"Since I hold the BAM's president position last April, one of our main focus was to strengthen para-badminton since we are not only to face the KL2017 and 2018 Asian Para Games, but also the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games," he said today.
Norza said this after visiting the national para badminton squad preparation at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil here, one of the venues for badminton event.
He said some of the para badminton athletes have the quality of world champions, but several aspects needed to be emphasized to ensure they were well prepared to take the challenge.
"We have quality players who have won many world championships, but we need to polish and ensure that they have good facilities especially in terms of sport science in order to ensure the are prepared towards the Tokyo 2020," he said.
Meanwhile Norza hoped the national squad would achieve the four-gold medal target in 13 events in KL2017, and at the same time to surpass the two gold medals achieved in 2015 edition in Singapore. — Bernama
