KUALA LUMPUR: Driven by amounting debt problems, the credit manager of a private company ended up pulling off a heist at a bank on Jalan Imbi here before coolly escaping with RM46,000 on Sept 11.
Dang Wangi district deputy chief Supt Habibi Majinji said the motive of the suspect was revealed upon his arrest at his office along Jalan Imbi on Sept 13.
"He was arrested in his office at 8.30pm. Police found RM13,000 cash in his office, believed to be part of the stolen cash.
"They also seized the clothes, machete and shoes used during the robbery," he told reporters at the district police headquarters here today.
Habibi said upon interrogation, the 38-year-old man revealed that he had pending personal loans.
"The RM13,000 seized from his office was the remaining cash robbed from the bank," he added.
The suspect is under remand until Sept 20 to facilitate investigations under Section 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for robbery, robbery when armed or with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt.
On Sept 11, the lone robber armed with only one machete struck a bank on Jalan Imbi here.
Wearing a face mask, he had approached a teller at the UOB Bank counter before whipping out the machete from a shoulder bag he was carrying.
He handed over the bag to the terrified staff and ordered for it to be filled up with cash before exiting the building through the front door.
Meanwhile, police have nabbed the suspect who was seen in a video where two American tourists were robbed.
The 26-year-old suspect was arrested in Setapak on Sept 12 at 12.30am.
The video of the incident made its rounds on social media on Sept 4.
The Americans are believed to have just checked out from a hotel to wait for their Uber driver when the incident happened.
