IPOH: Perak is drawing up plans to become the country's main food supplier, said chairman of the state Rural Development, Agriculture, Plantation, Information and Human Capital Development Committee, Datuk Saarani Mohamad.
Perak, he said, was the location for the biggest landing of marine fish, had the second largest padi fields and was the biggest producer of vegetables in the country.
"If we can produce our own food, it will reduce the cost of living of the people and boost the state and country's economic growth," he told reporters after opening the 41st annual general meeting of the Perak State Farmers' Organisation (PPN) here today, which was also attended by its chairman Datuk Nadzri Ismail.
In his speech, Nadzri said Perak PPN had recorded a gross profit of RM5.3 million last year and would increase its dividend to the members to 11% compared to 10% previously. — Bernama
