LABUAN: The Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized RM595,363 worth of goods in smuggling cases recorded since March until September, this year.
Labuan MMEA chief, Captain Che Adnan Md Isa said the smuggled goods were a variety of alcoholic drinks, with the biggest haul worth RM268,339 on July 9, followed by RM250,342 worth of contraband seized on Sept 16.
Seizures worth RM43,250 were made on May 5 and RM33,432 on March 22.
Che Adnan said smuggling was a serious problem and the agency was always stepping up patrol to curb the activity.
"All the smuggled items are kept and guarded by the Labuan MMEA until the issuance of a court order for the goods to be destroyed, and the cases were investigated under the Customs Act 1967," he told Bernama today.
Che Adnan said the raids' success was due to continuous patrolling operations and cooperation from the public to curb smuggling activities. — Bernama
