SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has made another step forward in empowering women with the launch of a lactation room in the state secretariat building.
Selangor Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs exco Dr Daroyah Alwi said the initiative was the result of research done in 2015 concerning the need to establish lactation rooms in offices.
She said based on the survey of 2,499 respondents from state civil servants and the private sector, over 94% were in agreement that such spaces should be set up for nursing mothers.
Daroyah added that the newly launched lactation room at the building would not only provide convenience and comfort to civil servants, but could also be used for nursing mothers who are otherwise there for business.
"The lactation room was introduced as many of the staff at the building are young mothers nursing their babies.
"The room was prepared as a sign of respect for women in performing their responsibilities as a mother.
"This is among the support system provided by the state government after the special parking space for pregnant mothers," she said during the launch of the lactation room at the building's foyer.
She also urged for state agencies and subsidiaries under the state government to follow suit by introducing other initiatives for women in their respective organisations.
