Review education policies to reduce graduates unemployment rate: Adnan Yaakob

KUALA LUMPUR: Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob (pix) suggested that the education policies in the country be reviewed to fit the current situation and help to reduce the unemployment rate among graduates.
He said among the recommendations was to study the effectiveness of the curriculum system and find ways to avoid the mismatch between the number of graduates and employment opportunities available.
Adnan, who is also the state Umno liaison chief said the review was essential due to the growing population in Malaysia resulting in the problems of the rising cost of living, unemployment and house ownership.
"The root cause of all these problems is the explosion of population. Those days the job goes out looking for the graduates but nowadays the graduates are hunting for the job.
"When I said the need to study, it means probably we need to study the curriculum. We got to study the suitability of the courses that we provide or offer for graduate and undergraduate students and the jobs available in the market," he told reporters after delivering the keynote address at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Higher Education Conference 2017, here today.
Themed 'Improving Higher Education Standards in the Muslim World', he said the conference was a platform for all OIC countries to share ideas and discuss on higher education issues.
The conference is in conjunction with the 8th Muslim World Biz 2017 Exhibition and Conference held from Sept 18 to 21.
Commenting on the fire incident at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah residential religious school which claimed the lives of 23 students and teachers early Thursday, he said it was crucial for the Education Ministry to inculcate noble values among students in order to develop good society.
"As for Muslim students, the Islamic teaching, values and principles need to be emphasised. Parents need to educate their children the importance of mannerism and respect the elderly," he explained. — Bernama
