SHAH ALAM: Police arrested 226 students, including secondary school students, for drug-related offences between January and August this year.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said among the drugs, ganja, heroin and methamphetamine were the popular ones with students.
"The students included those 16-years-old and above and also from institutions of higher learning. I can't rule out these students' involvement in underworld gangs because I understand these gangs are the back-up for them to distribute drugs but we have to see the type of case.
"Some of the students are also being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 Act," he told a press conference after destroying various types of drugs worth RM23 million, which were seized in numerous anti-drugs operations, at the Selangor police headquarters here today.
When asked about reports that Selangor topped the list of schools with disciplinary and drug issues, he said they held meetings every three months with the Education Department to discuss the problems faced.
Mazlan added that 77 civil servants and 817 foreigners were also nabbed while 584 traffickers have been picked up throughout the year.
Earlier, the Selangor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department disposed of more than RM23 million worth of drugs seized from 1990 until 2014.
The drugs will be incinerated at Bukit Pelandok in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.
The bulk of the substances were 595.39kg of cannabis followed by methamphetamine (189.86kg) and diazepam (60.45kg).
Drugs such as pseudoepherine, diphenhydramine, methadone and morphine were also included in the haul.
Mazlan said this was the second phase of their standard procedures, where the first one took place in January this year in Rawang and more than RM4 million of drugs were destroyed.
